Tableware
All of the work seen here is utilitarian in nature. Every item is made to be touched, used, and enjoyed. I take into consideration how each piece will be held, how it feels to hold it, the weight of the piece, and where the rim touches the user’s lips. Using a functional piece of pottery is an intimate experience so I strive to create the best experience possible. I tend to create simple forms that highlight the way the glazes interact with each other. To me, there’s something magical that happens when glazes come together. In the end, my biggest hope is that comfort is brought to those who use my work in their day to day activities. When someone reaches for their favorite mug or bowl, I would like for their hand to be reaching for something that I put my all into.
Bug SERIES
This particular series of work still takes into consideration many of the same aspects as the rest of my body of work, how it feels to hold and use them, but adds a playful layer to the equation. Usually bugs don’t tend to bother me but the moment they touch my cup or plate, it’s game over. That bug has got to go and my dishes must be washed before I can continue using them. With that in mind I thought it might be a fun exercise to create something that is, in some ways, a nightmare to use. The outside of each cup is decorated with bugs. This alone wouldn’t be much of a problem, but once you start to use the cup you realize there is something in the bottom. “Oh, it’s just another one of those decorative bugs from the outside of the cup,” you nervously say to yourself…. Or is it? Each time, you’re just a bit startled when you look in the bottom of your cup and see a bug in it. This feeling never goes away because what if one day you reach for a cup and there’s a real bug in it?
Dickin’ Around
This series is the beginning of my adventures in mold making. Not only am I creating molds/casts of dicks but I am quite literally just dicking around and exploring this new process without knowing exactly where it will lead me in the end.
Word Mugs
This series of mugs is a newly revised version of a series I have been exploring for a year or so at this point. Everyone loves a mug that tells the world who they are as a person or hints at their sense of humor. These mugs take that concept and removes the filters that many box stores place on the kinds of words or phrases their products display. No more puns or alluding to curse words/phrases deemed “not safe for work.” Let your freak flag fly while enjoying a delicious cup of morning brown (or other such comforting beverages).
